The EU stands out as a bastion of peace, democracy, the rule of law, personal freedoms, human rights and all this in a mature rich economic environment that allows the citizens of the EU to have really enjoyable fulfilling lives.
Alas when we start to look around us – out of the comfy EU high quality world – we can’t fail to see much of the world around us falling to pieces in a fast way. The EU is encircled by nothing but incredible human suffering and random destruction on a scale last witnessed in World War II.
Bella Rus is a rock solid police state second to none run as a corrupt family business by a Putin proxy. Russia itself needs no explaining given the cruel and criminal totally unprovoked war against Ukraine. In the Caucasus we witness the never ending wars concerning Georgia, Armenia and Aserbaidschan. Turning West we’re faced with the ruins of a totally destroyed Syria and a seriously damaged and bleeding Lebanon. Not to mention the bloody monstrous killings perpetrated by Hamas, one of the proxies – along with Hisbullah, the Houthis and many others – of the clerical Shia dictatorship residing in Iran. Human rights are a non starter when it comes to the heretical Shia priesthood in Teheran. To the South we watch barbarian mass murderings – even genocidal – all over the place: Jemen, Ethiopia – the president even got away with receiving a Nobel peace prize – Stalinist Eritrea, South-Sudan, Sudan, not to mention the utter suffering and misery in the arch of the Sahel and of course the sinkhole that used to go by the name of Libya.
All this incredible human suffering and misery should open our eyes that the peace we enjoy in our EU is not self-evident, even far from it and that, if we want to continue to enjoy our peaceful way of life in the EU, we will have to be prepared to take the measures necessary and need to defend our peace against those powers that want to take it away from us and that threaten to do so.
That is why the number one responsibility of a state is – and always has been and always will be – to protect and defend its citizens against the wars and misery coming from outside their realm. Alas we are forced to recognize that defence and the necessary military capabilities needed to protect the peoples and the nations of the EU simply do not exist. No country in the EU has taken defence and the protection of its citizens against war seriously. The only reason we Europeans enjoy a kind of protection against evil forces coming from abroad is because the US-taxpayer has been so kind as to protect us under the umbrella of NATO.
Alas freeloading can’t go on forever. Few EU members spend the, to NATO promised, 2% of its GDP on defence. It is about time the EU takes all matters of defence seriously and raises the needed funds to create its own defence capabilities.
This means a one integrated pan-EU industrial base to produce, design and provide the necessary kit needed to arm a one, fully integrated, EU-wide army, navy, air force and marines. Only by pooling our limited resources can we ever hope to obtain world class armed forces equipped and trained to guarantee our peace and freedom. It is about time to shoulder the duty to defend our very own peace by building a EU-pillar in all matters of defence equal to the USA under the shared and common NATO-umbrella.
We can be grateful that the US-taxpayer has been so kind as to fund the bills needed to defend Europe till this very day. Let’s heed the warnings of President Obama and others and take up finally our responsibility to do what is needed to keep us free and safe. If ever there has come a time to take action and to transform our economic successful EU into a true federal United States of Europe, it is today.
