Now is the time for celebration and congratulations, NATO has been keeping the peace in our Europe for the last 75 years which is, historically speaking, really a wonderful remarkable fact.

NATO has been keeping its promise of peace in Europe and for the first time in living memory, generations of Europeans, especially in Western-Europe have been living in real peace ever since.

What does NATO mean for Western-Europe, what does it mean for Central-Europe, what does it mean today for a united Europe and for the struggling Ukrainians of today?

Lord Ismay, the first secretary-general of NATO famously said that NATO keeps the Russians out , the Germans down and the Americans in. Indeed this is exactly what NATO has done and with great success one might say.

First let us go back in time some 75 years ago. How best to protect Western-Europe and keep the peace in Western-Europe was not at all self-evident and no foregone conclusion. On the one hand there was the giant looming threat of an ever more powerful and abusive authoritarian, so called scientifically led Union of Socialist Soviet Republics and their “COMMUNIST” clients and allies in Central-Europe and on the other hand there was the absolutely understandable fear of what a possible and eventual resurgent Germany might mean for Europe, given the fact that Germany and the Germans had so enthusiastically laid waste to Europe, not once but twice in the space of less than 30 years.

Not to forget that the highly traumatised and brutalised peoples of Western-Europe, living in destroyed and devastated countries were economically on their knees and in no position to defend themselves against dear uncle Joseph Stalin and his mass-murdering COMMUNIST criminals. The solution was the establishment of NATO, meaning the security guarantee for peace in Europe paid for by the US-taxpayer and made visible in Europe by the permanent stationing of large numbers of US soldiers on West-European soil. Every US-administration – Democrat and Republican alike – has stood firm behind this security policy of NATO to keep the peace in Europe. NATO was the military security umbrella that made the economic integration of Western-Europe in the European Union possible, without NATO no EU!

Joining NATO “ as fast as possible” was the very urgent logical first objective of the long suffering peoples and nations of Central-Europe – having been so totally and brutally abused and tortured not only by the Germans but also by the Russians – after the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of the USSR. Becoming members of NATO was the prerequisite to signing up for membership of the EU, so once again the security guarantee offered by NATO membership cleared the way for full economic integration of Central-Europe with Western-Europe.

Today it becomes ever more clear that it is NATO that is keeping Ukraine breathing and very much alive amid the very brutal inhuman and totally unprovoked onslaught by the Russians in their war on Ukraine. All members of NATO are united in their support for Ukraine for as long as it takes for they all know very well that if Russia succeeds in wiping Ukraine off the face of the earth that they will be next in line for liquidation at the hands of the Russians.
